From the ground up, the strategic donor-supported affiliation between Allen Matkins, a leading California-based law firm, and two of UCLA’s premier research centers—the UCLA Anderson Forecast and the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate—has helped power California’s commercial real estate industry. For nearly 20 years, this longstanding partnership has provided a stable foundation for leadership, economic analysis, and public dialogue around the future of the Golden State’s flourishing environment.
The continued successes that UCLA Anderson and Allen Matkins share together exemplify how a trusted collaborator can help strengthen the broader community it serves. Allen Matkins’ deep commitment to civic engagement and its alignment with Anderson’s mission is reflected in the firm’s thoughtful involvement and sustained support. This ongoing connection plays a vital role in shaping the real estate field and beyond—fostering trust, encouraging dialogue, and inspiring interest among professionals eager to stay informed about California’s dynamic market landscape.
What began as a collaborative effort to better understand the state’s office, retail, and industrial sectors has evolved into a biannual publication that industry professionals across California rely on for timely, actionable insights. The partnered Allen Matkins | UCLA Anderson Forecast California Commercial Real Estate (CRE) Survey serves as a vital tool and highly anticipated resource for the state’s dynamic real estate markets.
Spencer B. Kallick, Partner at Allen Matkins, serves on both the Forecast and Ziman Center boards. He co-authors the CRE Survey with Sayantani, the shared economist for both centers. This unique dual role ensures a unified voice and consistent analysis across the publication. In the most recent survey, conducted in May, we see a mixed but cautiously optimistic outlook. Multifamily housing remains a hot topic, with strong fundamentals in Southern California markets like Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. Meanwhile, the industrial sector continues to show resilience, with tightening vacancy rates and moderate rent growth across major markets.

During the UCLA Forecast: Summer 2025 Economic Outlook on June 18, Kallick provided a look into the latest CRE Survey results and emphasized the significance of the longstanding philanthropic relationship: “This survey gives us a real sense of what people on the ground are seeing across sectors and markets in California. It’s not just data—it’s insight from the people shaping the built environment.”
Allen Matkins’ support extends well beyond the CRE Survey. The firm helps produce and publish the report—available on both the Allen Matkins website and the UCLA Anderson Forecast site—and sponsors co-branded Forecast conferences each year, including the OC Regional Conference in April and the June Quarterly Conference at UCLA.
The partnership also fuels other initiatives, such as the Forecast in FIVE video series, which recently featured Kallick discussing trends in the CRE market.
As California’s commercial real estate landscape continues to develop, the Allen Matkins | UCLA Anderson Forecast CRE Survey remains a vital guide—thanks to the lasting support of a donor-partner who promotes the power of data, dialogue, and collaboration.
“We really appreciate our partnership with the Forecast. It’s been 18 years of collaboration, and we are proud of the work we’ve done together to bring timely, on-the-ground insights to California’s commercial real estate community.” — Spencer B. Kallick
After all this time, the connection between Allen Matkins and UCLA Anderson Forecast shows us it is more than a sponsorship. It is a shared investment in knowledge, leadership, and the future of the state – a true partnership that serves as a model for how philanthropy can drive change.
